Bilinmeyenin Evreninde Aşinalığın Kozasında

Anlamlandırma süreçleri, insanın dünyayı kavrayışındaki temel unsurlardandır. Aklın duyular ile birleşerek oluşturduğu çıkarımlar (a posteriori bilgi) algının temelini oluşturur.

Hegel, İkinci Jena Konferansı’nda[5] ötekinin konumunu: “Her biri, kendini ötekinin karşısına koyduğu yerde ona eşittir.

Her birey ötekinin kaderi aslında. Öte yandan Liz Heron ve Val Williams’ın 1996’da yayınladığı Illuminations: Women Writing on Photography from the 1850s to the Present kitabında Nietzsche’nin bu cümlesinin Naziler döneminde Hitler’in gençlik kamplarında kullanılan sloganlardan biri olduğu belirtilmiştir. In The Universe Of Unknown
And The Cocoon Of Familiarity

The processes of interpretation are among the primary elements within humanity’s comprehension of the world. Inferences (a posteriori knowledge) that are created by the combination of the mind and the senses, provide a basis for perception. Yet, the inferences of the mind continue independent of the senses, because it always has the tendency, of describing the unknown. The description could occur in forms such as open, -it is possible to establish the relation of causality- half open, -it is possible to hint at the relation of causality- or close, -it is completely deprived of the relation of causality just like it did in the post-hoc[1] fallacy-. Until a new urge shows up, the closed and open descriptions preserve the feature of acceptability they possess for they naturally incorporate attained judgements, and because of these, it is not wrong to say that they have a synthetic structure. As for half open descriptions, inquiries are synesthetic since they shuttle between the mind and the senses.

In his book Three Essays of the Theory of Sexuality (1905) which is published in the beginning of the 20th century, Freud mentions a half open description through a dialogue between a three year old child and his aunt. In this example, this three year old child who lies down in a dark room and feels uncomfortable of this uncertainty, says he could find relief in aunt’s voice whom he sees as a figure of authority. Since he could not change the conditions that cause it or to compensate it with the sense that creates anxiety, the child tries to solve an external uncertainty with a reference that reflects the notions of family, home and hearth. Thus, the sensory knowledge again, and to logical knowledge in the end. Although the physical conditions that cause child’s nerveousness have not changed during this process, the deduction has evolved and helped the existing perspective develop, but still there was no exact resolution and the illness was only relatively treated[2]. The borders of this in-betweenness is unknown and despite the tendency of lack of knowledge to engender fear, it is separated from simple nerveousness since the realized expectation is not solely terrifying. A few years later, Freud expresses this with the word “unheimlich” which he derived from “heimlich” whose meaning is related to home, relatedness, but at the same time to secret and forbidden[3].

Uncanny is naturally and inevitably paradoxical. It first describes the source of discomfort
-similar to the way the Ancient Greeks used the word barbarians to refer to non-Greeks-. At the moment it has been uttered, this description gives birth to “the other” and the uncanny tries to establish a relationship of resemblance to the other (assimilation), ignorance to it or to become distant with it. Yet, if the uncanny manages to execute one of these functions, the notionbecomes dysfunctional and disappears. The uncanny can sustain its own existence as long as theother exists[4]; but in practice, it has to be surpassed. At the end of the day, the uncanny leaves equations that are based on the “cleansing” destruction behind the colliding forces just like te restart of the Matrix or the occurrence of Ragnarok -because in a sense, reconciliation is the destruction of the state of conflict-. In Jena lectures[5], while Hegel was explaining the position of the other as: “Each is identical to the other precisely in that which separates it from the other is at the same time its self-identification with the other: in seeing itself in the other it knows itself.”, he was also summarizing the structure of the uncanny in a way.

Yet, the paradox of uncanniness starts again at the achieved level of equality. Like the differing implications of going between reason and senses, a threshold is also passed after the destruction and the distressing thing becomes -or is believed to become- familiar. The mind that utters the last word disobeys the external and creates freedom while it transforms the concept and itself[6]. Half open definitions are made into thoroughly closed or open ones -for at least some time-. But at this point the uncanny turns into a ground of agreement -sometimes by being forced- and one way or another it becomes undifferentiated from a seed which expects to sprout. So the uncanny subject becomes one thing and the other simulteneously. For instance the scream in Francis Bacon’s Figure with Meat (1954) treats the uncanniness of the trapped selfhood through the dialectic of body and spirit. On the other hand, the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight (2009), adds the pathological criminal identity which is influenced by psychoanalytical theories and which appeared frequently in comic books in the first half of the twenty-first century to Bacon’s discourse. With his unknown past -the uncertainty of the starting points draws on a psychoanalysis’s notion of dreams- and his anarchism that runs against the system disrupts Nietzsche’s words. As if he is aware that he is in a movie, he bends reality and turns the viewers into partners in crime by expressing uncanniness as “whatever doesn’t kill me makes you stranger”[7].

But the structure of images and meanings which is tried to be rebuilt after the destruction by becoming stranger, requires loneliness before it creates its own hierarchy. Like the imminent temporary deafness of a soldier which sees a grenade thrown at him but can do nothing, the uncanny cannot break free from the awareness of its own condition. But the part of its perception which it lost for a while strengthens other apprehensions of sense and though with an instinct to survive, reveals the wrong connections in its perspective, and turns loneliness into a critical cocoon of future uncanniness[8]. The cocoon is a camuflage similar to that of the soldier and it is an architectural structure of renaming with multitude and rebellion. Whether his name is Gregor Samsa or Josef K., the lonely person turns his eyes inward, in swept from one place to another by complicated thoughts even if he is certain about the way he is going to follow, more indifferent to the external world, and more defenceless than ever. But he waits for his formation in a place where he is away from the external world, in his cocoon[9]. In this respect, uncanniness hints that it is an element, like an unseen sickness which waits to relapse, of the dialectic of existence.

The whole of universes which is created by the synesthetic circle of uncanniness which brings space and time together, forms the artistic expression. The art which can go out of the cocoon that the individual formed during their transformation, is critical and political in its own area of freedom. Thus, it disrupts the linear structure of perception, changes the perception of history. So even though it rests on representation, it still is the reality itself. While humans use the past as a step on a ladder and looks forward, art reveals past representations of all the processes of the cycle of uncanniness, allowing them to be relived again and again[10]. Contemporary art on the other hand, may be thought of as a climate of conflicts and transformations which is created by the dynamics of the uncanniness of the structure which carries traces of Enlightenment and resembles a time-space laboratory; a space of potentialities of half open definitions which can turn into fully open or closed ones without putting a special effort[11].

The Clandestine Life of Objects, aims to analyse the dissenter and critical identity of art through objects which are physical forms of thoughts. It questions the notions of the other, the hidden, the repressed but that which is at the same time very close, in the foundations of uncanniness. While the fertile grounds of various thoughts which are continously in conflict and in transformation within the cocoon of the exhibition space, allow the viewers their own solitary spaces of thought; it wraps and alleviates the discomforts within the event horizon of objects of art which disrupt time and space, just like fascinating responses given to complex questions.

[1] The post hoc ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this) fallacy focuses on the cause and effect relation established between some knowledge which does not have a foundation of reson. The idea that someone thinks it would rain every time he goes out because, despite there is no logical connection, it once rained when he is out, could be an example for this.

[2] “The three-year-old boy whom I once heard calling from a dark room: “Aunt, talk to me, I am afraid because it is dark.” “How will that help you,” answered the aunt: “you cannot see anyhow.” “That’s nothing,” answered the child: “if some one talks then it becomes light.” – Freud, Sigmund (2018) Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, tr. [4] “Thus each existence is the product of a double declension. It is in this sense that it is a dual, notan individual form. We are not free to exist just on the side of our ego, our identity, or just on that of the so-called real world. We are wholly the products of this reason of adversity, this twin complicity. Destiny is divided, like thought, which comes to us from the other. Each is the destiny of the other. There is no individual destiny.” –Baudrillard, Jean (2001) Impossible Exchange, tr. [7] In his book Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche says “Was mich nicht umbringt macht mich stärker” which is translated into English as “What does not kill me, makes me stronger”. In the movie Dark Knight, one of the protagonists makes a small pun and says “I believe whatever doesn’t kill you simply makes you stranger”. On the other hand, in Liz Heron and Val Williams’s book Illuminations: Women Writing on Photography from the 1850s to the Present which was published in 1996, Val Williams indicates that this quote from Nietzsche was used as a slogan in Hitler’s youth camps. This sets an irrelevant but important example for the sake of showing how easy it is to use uncanniness within the political rhetoric.

[8] “I am alone in the midst of these happy, reasonable voices. All these creatures spend their time explaining, realizing happily that they agree with each other. In Heaven’s name, why is it so important to think the same things all together. It’s enough to see the face they make when one of the fishy-eyed men with an inward look and with whom no agreement is possible, passes them.” –Sartre, Jean-Paul (1975) Nausea, A New Directions Paperbook.

[9] “Josef,” called his uncle trying to disentangle himself from him so that he could stop walking, bu K. did not let go, “you’ve completely changed, you used to be so astute, are you losing it now? Do you want to lose the trial? Do you realise what that would mean? That would mean you would be simply destroyed. And that everyone you know would be pulled down with you or at the very least humiliated, disgraced right down to the ground. Josef, pull yourself together. The way you’re so indifferent about it, it’s driving me mad. Looking at you I can almost believe that old saying: ‘Having a trial like that means losing a trial like that’.” –Kafka, Franz (1999) The Trial, tr. Breon Mitchell, Shocken.

Edmund Jephcott, Stanford University Press.

[11] “The world is made up of random encounters (Lucretius, Hobbes, Marx, Althusser). Art, too, is made of chaotic, chance meetings of signs and forms. Nowadays, it even creates spaces within which the encounter can occur. Present-day art does not present the outcome of a labour, it is the labour itself, or the labour-to-be.” –Bourriaud, Nicholas (2002) Relational Aesthetics, Les Presse Du Reel.
